Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders among youth are on the rise. One study shows medical visits for eating disorders more than doubled for children under the age of 17 in the United States from 2018 to 2022 (John Hopkins Medicine).

Eating disorders are serious and potentially fatal illnesses that cause severe disturbances to a person’s eating behaviors. Understanding eating disorders is complex as they can present as restricted eating, obsessions with food, body weight, and occur in all genders.

Recognizing a need for more information in the Mercer Island community, Youth and Family Services (YFS) partnered with MIHS student, Ella Choe, and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Marissa Beck, to present a webinar on “Understanding Eating Disorders” (5/18/26).

Webinar topics include:

  • The difference between disordered eating and eating disorders.

  • How to spot early warning signs.

  • How to support those struggling with an eating disorder.

  • The resources and support that are available.
