Community Safety Initiatives

It takes an ISLAND to support all MI youth! Learn about current initiatives to keep youth and families safe and healthy.

Talking to Kids about Frightening News - When there are traumatic events in the news where individuals or families are hurting, your child may be frightened and confused. Calm, honest conversations help children feel safe and supported.

Personal Safety - Conversations with youth around personal safety including boundaries, consent and safety aren’t always easy — but they’re essential. Learn practical tips for having meaningful, informed, age-appropriate conversations about personal safety with your child.

Supporting Safe Celebrations - High school milestones and special events such as Homecoming, Prom and Graduation are an exciting time for both students and their families, and a well-deserved opportunity to celebrate! Although MOST Island teens do not use alcohol, cannabis, or prescription medication that is not their own, celebrations can create an opportunity for risk-taking behaviors when emotions are high. As adults, we can also get caught up in the moment ourselves and may deviate from our typical parental decisions. Learn tips for adults to prepare and support a safe celebration.

Lock it Up - King County's Lock It Up program’s mission is to promote safety in our communities by increasing safe firearm storage. Storing guns locked up when they're not on you is the best way to prevent curious kids from getting hurt with firearms, youth and adults in crisis from using a family firearm for suicide, and firearms from being stolen and misused by others.

E-Bike Safety - E-bikes have become an increasingly popular choice to get around, especially for Island youth. The City of Mercer Island and the Mercer Island School District have partnered to provide students and families with information to keep youth safe. Learn about the different types of bikes and the laws and safety tips.

No More Under - Water safety is important knowledge for everyone to have, and it is essential for our community where water sports and play are part of Island life. Learn safety tips and gather resources from No More Under, a non-profit dedicated to saving lives through water safety education, legislation, and increasing equitable access to swimming lessons and tools.
