A sense of connection and open communication with a trusted adult is a strong protective factor for youth wellbeing. Try to take time each day to be fully present with your child and listen without trying to fix or offer advice. (Even 5-15 minutes of your full attention can make a big difference!)

Youth listen and watch the adults around them. Model the behaviors you want to teach your child and young people in your life. This includes how we treat others, how we treat ourselves, and the choices we make. (Did you know parents are the #1 influence whether teens choose to drink alcohol?)

Check in with youth to ask how they are doing. How are they coping with the stress of school, friends, family and activities? Remind youth they need adequate sleep and downtime in their schedule to take care of their mental wellbeing. Encourage time with friends, outdoor activities, physical activity and music.
