Youth Mental Health First Aid

Mercer Island HYI is partnering with Jewish Family Service (JFS) to provide a training on Youth Mental Health First Aid which is for Adults who support youth. This program is offered at no-cost to Mercer Island residents.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a certification course* through the National Council of Mental Wellbeing that introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds an understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help adolescents in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge.

Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select intervention, provide initial help, and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help. This training, like CPR training, does not require any clinical background or prior experience.

Participants will learn:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group.

  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.

  • How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis.

  • How to connect the youth with help.
